Bio-Sand Water Filters

In Thane District (location of Ganeshpuri) many villages, particularly those in the remote rural and tribal areas, don’t have adequate access to drinking water. Medical personnel interviewed by TMA confirmed the existence of many waterborne diseases in the area. In fact, the local doctor in Ganeshpuri said that every single person who comes to him has worms, and the major source of worms is the water supply.

TMA has implemented a project to manufacture bio-sand water filters in Ganeshpuri. The bio-sand filter is relatively inexpensive to make, costs nothing to operate, takes little maintenance and, most important, is highly effective at eliminating water impurities. Regular use of a filter greatly reduces the risk of waterborne illness.

Local residents were hired to make the filters, install them in homes, and provide on-going maintenance. An educational program on the value of pure drinking water and the use of sanitary habits is held in conjunction with the filter project.

And the best part—the filters costs only $25 to $30 to manufacture and install and provide pure water indefinitely.

Your donation of $25 will give Prabda and her family clean drinking water indefinitely!

Prabda lives in one of the many small settlements that surround Ganeshpuri, India. She lacks access to pure water so Prabda and her family suffer from the various intestinal diseases that run rampant throughout the area. Your donation of only $25 can change her life.

In the fall of 2006. Third Millennium Awakening (TMA) purchased three molds to manufacture bio-sand water filters and hired local residents to produce them. The bio-sand filter is relatively inexpensive to make, costs nothing to operate, takes little to maintain and, most important, it is highly effective at eliminating water impurities.

Several months after distributing the first 70 filters, TMA went back to the recipients to find out how things were going. Using an oral questionnaire, research staff discovered that recipients were not only using the filters, but they had experienced a significant drop in water-borne diseases such as fever, malaria, and dysentery. As one householder put it, “Filter is like weapon to fight against water borne diseases.” Members of the village who had not received filters were asking for them.

The villagers pay nothing for their filters which cost $25 to manufacture and give out. With your donation, we can distribute another 150 filters by the end of the year. Help Prabda, her family and her friends with a gift of $25 today. Then reach out to ten of your friends and ask them to donate $25 to the project. This will bring pure water to many people in need.
